The Prairie School Foundation was the first public school foundation in Iowa.

The Prairie School Foundation, established in 1981, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation dedicated to enriching the lives of all College Community School District students and making a positive difference in their education. The mission of the foundation is:

Collaborating for Sustained Success in Education

The College Community School District is a growing school district serving approximately 6,000 students from Linn, Benton and Johnson Counties. The 137-square mile district includes part of southwest Cedar Rapids, the cities of Ely, Fairfax, Shueyville, Swisher and Walford.

The Prairie School Foundation is chartered by the State of Iowa and is governed by a volunteer board. As a not-for-profit organization recognized by the Internal Revenue Service, the foundation solicits and receives gifts that are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. These funds are managed and distributed for the benefit of the College Community School District.

In addition to fundraising, the foundation seeks to encourage Prairie School alumni to maintain an active relationship with their classmates and the school district as it evolves in the delivery of an education that will enable students to meet the challenge of thriving in an ever-changing world. The foundation also advocates for the College Community School District focusing on its residents, businesses and organizations serving the community.

Prairie School Alumni

The foundation actively works as a partner with the school district to identify needs including equipment or materials in the classrooms, or for the enhancement of extra-curricular activities. We also work with district administrators and teachers to develop initiatives such as the addition of clubs for intermediate students. The most recent examples include archery, coding, art, writing, cooking, gaming, drama and Lego League.

Together we channel resources from sources including our fundraising event proceeds, annual fund donations, grants, estate gifts and gifts-in-kind to enhance academic achievement for all students. Foundation support is absolutely vital for the enhancement of Prairie’s students, teachers and programs. The generosity of hundreds of donors made the 2021-2022 fiscal year a successful one for the Prairie School Foundation. Take a look at our annual report.
